Hi there, I’m Dr Gary Turnbull… veterinary surgeon, and a Director of the Lincoln Institute. I trust you’ve been enjoying the Marketing Dentistry webinar series brought to you by IM3…the veterinary dental company in collaboration with the Lincoln Institute.
I am truly grateful to be the owner of a highly profitable companion animal veterinary practice. The centre piece of our success has been a sophisticated approach to veterinary dentistry. Over the past 10 years my team and I have refined and mastered a dental service offering to pet owners. Our income generation from dentistry is now 4-5 times that of industry average. Not surprisingly, it didn’t just happen.
It has taken years to identify and conquer the challenges most practices grapple with forever.

Why aren’t all companion animal practices treating a multitude of dental cases all day, every day? And…enjoying the financial benefits thereof?
Well… along the journey, I encountered and overcame 3 big obstacles…
The first, being a disconnect between the clinical upskilling in dentistry that veterinary students receive during their undergraduate training and the prevalence of dental disease that exists in the companion animal population. It is widely accepted that as a companion animal veterinarian, approximately 80% of your patients will be suffering some form of dental or oral disease and yet in many instances, undergraduate training encompasses little more than a handful of hours devoted to theory and practical skills. When I ask veterinary staff foundation questions like, “How many teeth do dogs and cats have?” or “what’s a normal gingival sulcus depth for each species?” I tend to see a lot of embarrassed faces and blank stares….
Secondly, as a business owner, how do you get your team to routinely, reliably and repeatedly do what is expected of them. And…have them doing the heavy lifting for you rather than constantly needing to push them. Whilst I was a competent clinician when I took on practice ownership, I had no clues (and no education) in business leadership. Concepts like; accountability, alignment, and engagement were all completely foreign to me.
Finally, traditional veterinary education focuses almost entirely on clinical and technical capability. It does not equip graduates with the skillset required to enjoy a long and fulfilling career in practice. The softer, behavioural skills that allow veterinarians to thrive amongst clients and colleagues are overlooked. Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter how much you know about dentistry and how good you are technically if you struggle to get pet owners to a ‘yes’ with your recommendations and/or feel guilty for charging properly for the work you do.
Recognising you face these challenges too, the obvious question to ask yourself is, “where to from here?”

In the quest for knowledge and technical skills in the realm of companion animal dentistry, I would refer you to the specialist community. Of course, they are our guiding light that when it comes to understanding the science, and setting the accepted standards of patient care.

Finally, if implementation and execution is holding your business back?
… Then we should have a chat about what you’re doing and what you’re NOT doing as a business leader.
I spent many years trying to figure things out for myself. Wondering why my business was so dependent on me. Why it was so difficult to get people to do what I asked of them, and why they just couldn’t get on with each other AND the job. At times I felt more like a teacher in a school yard than a business owner.
The truth is…I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Leadership was nothing more than a vague concept for me, particularly in the business setting. I was just making it up as I went…. trial & error.
Then I was introduced to Paul Ainsworth, founder of the Lincoln Institute. Paul taught me a raft of leadership principles, hand-picked from a 14 year military career as well the Australian Graduate School of Management’s MBA program and several years in the boardroom, as Chairman and CEO of BRW’s fastest growing company in Australia (2011).
As I learnt and applied these principles to my own veterinary practice, my experience both commercially and personally completely transformed. I have surrounded myself with a team of highly talented people who do the heavy lifting for me. They not only know what they need to do, they know why they do it. They’re all on the same page…..they love their work and they’re dedicated to the success of my business.

The path I followed is now being delivered to more than 200 veterinary practices and their teams across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and The Philippines. Through various online and virtual learning platforms, Lincoln’s teachings are available and disseminated to all levels of veterinary business, from practice owners and managers through to the most junior team members.
Imagine if you mastered how to:
- Motivate people so they treated your business like it was their own
- Make critical decisions swiftly and lead rapid change with confidence & success
- Delegate effectively to buy yourself more time and energy
- Have your people do what they say they’re going to, and keep doing it without the need for you to be constantly checking up on them
- Conduct difficult conversations without stress and apprehension
- Quickly deal with conflict amongst the ranks before it escalates
- Secure the best possible financial return for your hard work as a business owner
Bottom line, if you’d like to propel your business and your team by working a whole lot smarter, not harder then we’re here to help. Lincoln’s leadership principles will provide you with the critical competencies to move forward with the greatest success.
As a way of expressing their gratitude for attending the webinar series (be it live or recorded) and to help build your dental business, IM3 are gifting you a complimentary 90 minute Business Strategy Session.
This is a virtual face-face where you and I can examine your greatest challenges and frustrations, whether they be cultural, strategic or financial. I’ll share some fundamental concepts relevant to your unique situation to help make your next steps as quick and pain-free as possible.
To be clear, there is no obligation attached to this offer. We’ll explore whether or not Lincoln can support you to overcome your challenges and achieve your goals sooner rather than later. If it’s a yes, that’s great. If not, that’s ok also…..as long as we’ve helped!
