CALCULATION OF FTE
Full-Time Equivalent Small Animal (FTESA):

Full-Time Equivalent Large Animal (FTELA):
The exact or approximate number of FTE’s engaged in small practice for the period assessed. As roles can shift hour to hour, day to day for mixed practice vets, please use the extrapolation method described below if required. Please enter N/A if you perform no Large Animal work.
FTE Veterinarian Split Extrapolation Method:
For this exercise you will need the historical appointment scheduler as well as a copy of the historical veterinarian / wages book. Please review several non-consecutive weeks (e.g. 1 week per quarter over the 12 month period assessed) and firstly perform a calculation of total hours of veterinary work performed that week. If possible, please include any after-hours work performed in the tally. Using the roster then attribute any veterinarian hours where a veterinarian was dedicated to LA only or SA only roles.
In the cases where some or all of the veterinarians had spit roles day to day; using the appointment book, approximate the hours across for each veterinarian that was dedicated to Large Animal work (as a proportion of total hours) e.g. periods each day blocked off for them on LA visits/work across the week and include after-hours LA appointments if possible. If the minority of your work is Small Animal, you may choose to extrapolate from the appointment book in the reverse fashion. Then calculate the average ratio of Large Animal to Small Animal work across the weeks examined. This average ratio can then be used to calculate your FTESA and FTELA for the period examined.
SEGMENTED LA/SA SEARCHES
VBMS capability and the structure of your fees for service and products can influence the ease at which you can source LA and SA segmented KPIs. As a minimum however, nearly all systems you can revert to a basic “query” search. For example a search that relates to LA component of the business would include a cross reference search element the specifies the large animal species serviced by the practice e.g. Cattle, Horses, Deer, Sheep
